Middlesbrough 7 v 7 Herne Bay

Herne Bay went into this game feeling confident that they could improve on the 9-2 defeat to Middlesbrough in April. Within 2 minutes of the start Tom White and Danny Butcher combined on a counter attack for Butcher to put the Bay 1 up. Less than 2 minutes later, the same two combined for Butcher’s second. The Bay were off to a flying start and only a good save from the Middlesbrough’s keeper prevented White scoring from a direct free hit.

Middlesbrough rallied and put the Bay under pressure. Herne Bay were solid in their defensive tactics, sacrificing possession and relying on breakaways. Some careless counter attacks by the Bay gave Middlesbrough chances to overload Bay’s defence and score 4 goals in 4 minutes 4-2. The game was getting more physical and after a blue card incident Tom White scored from a direct hit to make the score 4-3. Brough came back again just before halftime and at the break the score was 5-3

Middlesbrough were quick out of the blocks and increased their lead within 1 minute of the start of the second half. For the next 5 minute with the score at 6-3 Middlesbrough put the Bay under continuous pressure, hoping to finish the game off, but after many counter attacks Danny Butcher converted 2 in 2minutes to bring the difference to just 1 goal.

The game was fiercely contested, both referees having to caution all the players. With 1.22 minutes to go Middlesbrough scored and at 7-5 the game looked over. Just 10 seconds later Danny Butcher scored for the Bay and there was one final chance to get something out of the game.

With emotions running high and bodies clashing all over the rink, a contested penalty was awarded to Herne Bay with 7 seconds to go. It took several minutes to calm the players. Dave Todd, under immense pressure stepped up to take the penalty, he found the gap and now it was 7-7 with 5 seconds to go. Even with seconds to go any side could have snatched a win, but it stayed at 7-7.

Herne bay were delighted to have taken a point off the second strongest side in the league, who still had hopes of becoming champions.

A Team performance with the defence underpinning the result, keeper Kristoff White leading from the back.
An excellent result but there were still many areas that The Bay need to improve on and if they do, next season will see them climb up and up the league to who knows where?

Herne Bay 10 v 7 HBU CSL

Bays second game of the weekend saw a local derby with Herne Bay United CSL, the last encounter saw CSL romp home to a 6-1 win.

The game was set to be a hard fort affair with both CSL and The Bay not wanting to give anything away, however after only 34 seconds Capt Halverson put Bay ahead, Bay were now in new territory 1-0 up in a local derby. CSL then got one back through their Captain Joe Fidock. Bays new tactics and at that point young team (2 at 16, one at 19 one at 20 and captain Halverson), were having much of the play, and with shots raining in from Danny butcher, and the rest of the team, Bay were on a mission,  but a substitution from CSL saw veteran striker Paul McVey come on and within 4 minutes had put CSL in a 4-1 lead. a further goal from CSL, and in reply one for the Bay through Tom White meant that the Bay went in to the Cabin at half time 5-2 down.

Bay again at the break re-grouped and with more words from new coach Hellio’, came out with the bit between their teeth. Bay started to push the game on a little but conceded again through Fidock, A time out was called and Bay re-grouped, sorted out the new systems and started playing at the highest level they could. Bay then got 2 Goals in quick succession through Tom White.

Bays coach made some team changes and Dave Todd came on from the bench along with Luke Mosley, this gave Bay some fresh legs and were instantly rewarded with a hat trick from Todd. The game was now 7-7 with 6 mins remaining, both CSL and Bay made some more tactical changes, and the game became an end to end affair, with both team's young goalkeepers Kriss White for Bay and Jason Robertson from CSL making some amazing saves.

The Bay's striking force came through again and again and with goals from Danny Butcher 2 and Tom White, they completed the victory...10-7. The whole Squad contributed to their first of many wins.

“An amazing game for the team, and with next year 2010 being our 100 anniversary a great future for the club”
said Dave Walters Team Manager."

Team list, Kristoff White, Peter Halverson, Tom White, Luke Mosely, Danny Butcher, Peter Taylor, Matt Dalton. Dave Todd, Matt Holmes, James Sheppard.

Herne Bay 4 v 7 Manchester

This weekend saw Herne Bay Roller Hockey Club in action in the Premier League at the Pier, Herne Bay.
Bay currently bottom of the league, needed to get some points on the board, to avoid relegation, and impress both their supporters and new Portuguese Head Coach H. Espirito Santos.

The EX-Professional coach, has worked with some of the top teams in Portugal, Spain South Africa and Mozambique, But has now made his home in Herne Bay. He was appointed Head coach in March, with the aim to keep Herne Bay in the top flight this season and build championship winning Teams at all levels for the club in the future.

Bays first game of the weekend was against Manchester, Bay earlier in the season suffered a huge thrashing buy the Manchester boys, most of which are European ex-Pros, but with new guidance, belief, tactics and fitness the Bay were in a positive mood.

The game started well with Bay Using their new defensive strategy, this seemed to stop Manchester in their tracks, and give Bay the chance to play counterattack hockey. The game was a great spectacle, with both teams having chance after chance, Bay at this point were kept in the game, by their self belief and team spirit, great blocking and defending, and some fine saves by keeper Kristoff White.

Mid way through the first half Manchester broke through the Bay defence and went 1 up, but only moments later Bay equalised through Tom White. Manchester then started to push the game and buy the half time break were 4-1 up.

The Bays heads were not down, and the second half saw more of the same from both teams, with great defending, team attacks and goalkeeping at both ends, Bay had entered the second half as though it were a new game, in a tit for tat 10 minute spell Manchester scored 3 and Bay equalised with goals from Captain Peter Halverson, Dave Todd, and Peter Taylor. This saw the second half 3-3, But with the final score 7-4.

Bay’s Captain Halvorsen said” although a defeat, we are now on the first step of the ladder, the new coaching systems are only starting to be put in place, and the team spirit and belief is amazing”

Herne Bay 3 ..........HBU 16

We know the score, what can we say about the result??

Despite the talk before this game it was unlikely that Herne Bay were going to win.
So what of our recent training program under new coach Helio Espirito Santos?
Is there anything different?
Has there been any progress?
Are we on the “right way”?

We are about 10 hours into a new training program we have 7 systems to work on and each system will take about 20 hours. So we are 10 hours into a 140 hour program.

Did this system work? Based on the result you could say no and that would be right.
Does the system work? is a different question. The players make the system work and our players did not make it work. Any system needs everyone to do their part well and understand the importance of discipline and team work. My opinion is that the system only operated correctly 25% of the time.
Players need to believe in the system and their ability to keep doing it…….the system does work.

The players in general drifted in and out of the system of play and too many times lacked discipline. A clear difference between the teams was fitness and power. After a bad start the Herne Bay team settled down and started to play but by half time the legs were starting to go. The Team rallied for the start of the second half and started to come back at United but again did not have the power and stamina to continue to pressure. The last quarter of the game United pushed on and the goals started to go in again. On performance levels I would not give any Herne Bay player more than 6 out of 10 and some only 3. This may seem harsh and negative but if we really want to perform and win at this level them the performances must improve. With higher fitness levels alone we can improve on this performance.

To play these systems require a different mind set from that which we have been used to in the past. This mind set challenges our attitude to the way we approach everything about Roller Hockey. It will take time but if we are to be successfully there is no going back

The good news is that there are signs of change and growth both in individuals and the team. I welcome and encourage this, and also hope that everyone in the club has an open mind to change. The club has a bright future but we all need to work hard to achieve our potential. It will be one step at a time, so I look forward to the next game and an improvement.

The season so far.............................

You only have to look at the results and the league to see that it has not been a good start to our second season in the Premier League.

The moral and unity of the team was severely damaged at the end of last season, this and a number of issues within the club have caused a lack of focus and this has reflected in the Premier Teams performance. Despite these setbacks and the current league situation there is a new purpose and drive within the players. We have to try and salvage what we can over the rest of the season and get ourselves on course for 2009/10.

We have the good fortune to have acquired the services of a new Head Coach...Helio Santos.

There are many plans being made and a lot of hard work to do to get us on the right track for the future.

" Herne Bay must grow up .....and lean the right ways............then we cause a scandal"
H.Santos

  • Macari 0 - 0 Roller Skater..........7th February 09

  • The second game of the evening saw 2 HBRH sides meet each other. Macari lying top of the league undefeated were keen to to extend their run of success, whilst Roller Skater were keen to regain some pride after some inconsistent games. Both teams were under instructions to use this game to try out new tactics. This was just as much about discipline as it was getting a result. Both teams started very cautious, testing each other out, looking for an opening whilst keeping posession. Roller Skater struggled to get their defence organised and could have gone a goal down a number of times. Macari's big hitters were starting to get on target and Roller Skater were begining to tire, half time 0-0 result was kind to Roller Skater.

Second Half saw Roller Skater start to put together their attack and Macari had to be strong in defence. As the game went on opportunities came at both ends, the game could have gone anyway. Probbably not the most exciting game of hockey for the supporters but there were clear signs of both teams being more composed and controled in their play.

Helio was pleased... considering the teams have only had 2 hours of using new systems of play

  • Wilbee 1 - 1 Roller Skater..........3rd January 09
  • Kent League's third event of the season took place on Saturday 3 January, and was viewed and enjoyed by a good number of local spectators. The opening game was between Wilbee and Roller Skater and both teams had some good chances to open the scoring with them both coming close on several occasions, but both goal keepers keeping their teams in the game. The remainder of the first half was end to end hockey with both teams playing hard but with no goals being scored. Half time saw a draw Wilbee's 0-0 Roller Skater. The second half saw Roller Skater up the pace of their game with Luke Moseley scoring after 10 minutes with a well placed shot giving Wilbee's goal keeper no chance to react. The game continued with some good defensive work by both teams but with Mick Harris saving the blushes of Wilbee's by scoring with one and a half minutes left on the clock. Final Score Wilbee 1–1 Roller Skater.
  • Macari's 5 - 3 CSL ..........3rd January 09

  • The second game of the evening saw CSL take on Macari's. This was a high paced affair but neither team were playing good hockey, with CSL did not seeming to be on song. However CSL's Captain Joe Fidock put CSL ahead with seven minutes left on the clock added to four minutes later by Lee Chestnutt, CSL going into half time CSL 2–0 Macari's. The second half saw a rejuvenated Macari's with Mike Back scoring after just two minutes with an excellent shot taken from an unmarked position. CSL's Arran Bowyer then scored the last of CSL's goals for this match, with Macari's Tom White and Danny Butcher putting Macari's ahead with the final score CSL 3–5 Macari's.

CSL's Captain Joe Fidock said he was disappointed to lose but CSL did not deserve to win as Macari's were the more energetic and determined of the two teams but "lets hope that we do better in our Premier League game tomorrow".

  • Macaris 6-5 Bayuboys
    ..........13th December 08

The Kent League's second event of the season took place on Saturday evening. The opening match saw Macari's playing Bayuboys and a large crowd were entertained by this energetic and exciting performance. Macari's had the better chances in the opening few minutes with Macari's Richard Butcher drawing first blood seven minutes into the game. Bayuboys came close to scoring on several occasions but goal keeper Kristoff White denied Bayuboys, keeping Macari's in the game. The second goal conceded by Bayuboys was during the first half, again scored by Richard Butcher with six minutes left on the clock. The remainder of the first half was end to end hockey with both teams playing hard, but with no further goals being scored. Half time score Macari's 2, Bayuboys 0.

The second half saw Bayuboys up the pace of their game with Tom Hawkins scoring after five minutes with a searing slap shot giving Macari's goalkeeper no chance of reacting. Then within a further 30 seconds Sam Rowbotham placed an excellent drive shot, unsighted by the goalkeeper, into the back of the net. It was now two goals apiece but Macari's did not sit back and it was a full rink push all the way. Danny Butcher then put Macari's back in the lead with a well struck slap shot but Bayuboys were not going to be denied and their efforts were rewarded with Liam Holland placing one of his trade mark slap shots from the left hand side into the back of the net. The battle continued apace with Tom Hawkins again levelling the score with six minutes to go, again replied to by Macari's Danny Butcher scoring his second goal of the game. This was developing into an exciting end to end tit for tat game with Bayuboys again levelling the score with another goal from Liam Holland. The last five minutes of the game continued with total commitment from both teams. The deciding goal of the game being scored with just 43 seconds left on the clock with a clever deflection into the net by Macari's Dave White, from a long pass. Final Score Macari's 6–5 Bayuboys. This was an exciting and enthralling game played until the end at a very high pace.

Both teams' Captains, Myles Tichband (Bayuboys) and Tom White (Macari's), said that they had all really enjoyed the game, and agreed that a draw would have been a fair result, but Macari's were more than happy to take the points.

Macari's: Kristoff White (GK), Tom White (Cpt), Mike Back (1), Danny Butcher (2), Dave White (1), Richard Butcher (2)

Bayuboys: Joel Carnell (GK), Liam Holland (2), Jake Fox, Sam Rowbotham (1), Myles Tichband (Cpt), Becca Lawrence, Tom Hawkins (2), Kelly Fox (GK)

    CSL 7-0 Roll Skater..........13th December 08

The second match of the evening saw CSL take on Roller Skater. This was not only a high pace game but a well structured display of roller hockey from CSL who very nearly dominated the first half with the Captain, Joe Fidock scoring within the first 70 seconds. However Roller Skater came very close to scoring on several occasions, but CSL's goalkeeper Jason Robertson provided an outstanding performance keeping Roller Skater out of the game. CSL finishing the first half CSL 7 Roller Skater 0.

The second half saw the pace increase with Roller Skater pushing hard in an attempt to reduce the deficit, but CSL were taking advantage of this tactic, hitting Roller Skater on the counter attack. However Paul Dalton, Roller Skater's goal keeper, performed exceptionally well in the second half denying CSL any further goals.

Following the game, Joe Fidock, CSL's Captain, said that they had enjoyed the game immensely, he was very pleased with his players as they certainly played far better and more structured hockey than they have done for a while. It was a little disappointing for CSL not to score in the second half, when they should have dominated the play, but Roller Skater's change in defensive tactics frustrated any further scoring opportunities for CSL. Joe also complimented Lee Chestnut's contribution, having returned after a five year break, which was an added asset to the team as is our goalkeeper Jason who is improving game on game.

CSL: Jason Robertson (GK), Joe Fidock (1), Charlie Pughe, Steve Clarke (1), Lee Chestnut (2), Joe King (3), Arran Bowyer

Roller Skater: Paul Dalton (GK), John Dalton, Matt Dalton, Peter Taylor, David Todd

  • Wilbee 1 - 6 Apex .......... 8th November 08

The Kent League started in earnest this weekend. For the purpose of the competition, six teams have been formed from the town's two clubs. The opening match saw Wilbee's take on Apex. A crowd of around 200 watched this tense affair. Wilbee's had the better chances in the opening few minutes, with Mick Harris, (the original fox in the box) coming close a couple of times. It was Apex's Phil McVey who opened the scoring with a well taken flick which flew past an un-sighted Christophe White in the Wilbee's goal. Apex were now warming to the task and five minutes later Nick Barton put them 2-0 ahead. With eight minutes to go in the half Matt Barton ghosted in at the far post to finish well, making it 3-0 to Apex. Both defences were on top for the remainder of the half, and at halftime the score was 3-0 to Apex.

The second half saw Wilbee's up the pace of their game; John Chalk, Robin Cathcart and Mick Harris all had chances but Apex's keeper Garrett Priestley kept them all out. Then with 10 minutes gone Jon Barton scored from close range after a goal mouth scramble to put Apex 4-0 up. Wilbee's did not give in, and with seven minutes remaining they won a penalty, which Mick Harris expertly put away in the top left hand corner to make the score 4-1. A minute later John Chalk burst through Apex's defence only to see his slap shot hit the crossbar. Wilbee's continued to commit players forward in an effort to get themselves back in the game; this left them short at the back. Apex capitalised on this as Paul McVey exploited the gaps in their defence to score two goals in quick succession to make the final score 6-1 to Apex.

Following the game Wilbee's captain John Chalk said: "We are gutted. It was a close game and we really wanted to get our campaign under way with a win. We knew we were taking a chance towards the end but we needed to push players forward if we were going to get anything from the game. Apex caught us on the break and it cost us. On another day it might have gone our way, but that's roller hockey."

Apex captain Phil McVey said: "The team are pleased with the win; once we went a few goals up we knew it was going to be difficult for them to come back. Both teams played some excellent hockey, and it was a great advert for the game. If all the matches are this close it is going to make for an entertaining competition. This side is made up from players who all played in HBU's first Premier League title way back in the early 90's. Although we may have slowed down as we have all got older, we haven't lost our competitive nature. The hunger to win every competition we enter is still there, and this competition is no different."

Apex: Garret Priestley (GK), Jon Barton (1), Nick Barton (1), Matt Barton (1), Nigel Mills, Phil McVey (c) (1), Paul McVey (2)

Wilbee's: Kris White (GK), Robin Cathcart, Ian Bates, Richard Adams, John Chalk, Geoff Staggs, Mick Harris (1), Dave Walters

    Roll Skater 5 - 2 Bayuboys .......... 8th November 08

The second match of the evening saw Rollskater take on BayUboys. This match was even closer than the first. It was Rollskater, (fielding a bare team) who drew first blood after only a minute; John Dalton, playing for the first time in six years, coolly slotted home from a tight angle to make it 1-0. The game then settled down with both teams creating chances, it was the BayUboys keeper who the busiest of the two as Rollskater slowly applied more and more pressure on their opponents. Then with only 46 seconds remaining in the half Dalton found some space in front of goal and another fine finish made it 2-0 at the break.

Rollskater started the second half as they started the first; David Todd scored two goals in the first minute to make it 4-0. BayUboys had to step their game up, and despite goals from Sam Rowbottom and Myles Barker to keep BayUboys in touch, they couldn't break down the box defence employed by Rollskater, and Rollskater ran out comfortable 5-2 winners with their last being scored by Luke Mosely.

Following the game Rollskater's David Todd said: "We really enjoyed it, and we're pleased for John, two goals on his comeback after six years, he hasn't lost it".

Bayuboys: Joel Carnell (GK), Liam Holland, Emily Sheppard, Myles Barker(1), Sam Rowbottom (1), Myles Tichband, Joe Singleton, Tom Hawkins.

RollSkater: Paul Dalton(GK), Matt Dalton, Luke Mosley(1), David Todd(2), John Dalton (2)

National Under 20's Cup Final, Peterborough 18th July 2009

Herne Bay 4 v 3 HBU
(Herne Bay 0 v 3 HBU)

Herne Bay make dramatic comeback

The two under 20's teams from local rival Herne Bay clubs faced each other in the National Finals on Saturday. The game started cautiously with both teams testing each other. United broke the deadlock with a fine defection from Alfie Shepard. This settled the United side and they pushed on controlling most of the play.

The Bay defense held out well and it was a deflection from a Bay pass that hit a doorway in the side of the rink and found Miles Barker on his own in front of goal. Miles' shot found the net and United were 2 up. This spurred United on even more and they were now on full flow. Some of their players allowed themselves to become over zealous and a number of yellow cards were given out.

The Bay were having a number of breakaways but they were not really into their stride. One of the numerous United shots found its way under Kris Whites' pads and creped over the line to put the Bay 3 down. United were ready to kill off the game but made a number of tackles that were outside the rules. The referees caught up with them resulting in blue cards, key players off for 2 minutes. Although this did not change the game in this half ,it meant 2 united players would have to play the 2nd half having to avoid a red card.

They play was fairly even from then on and the half time arrived with Herne Bay 0 HBU 3

For the second half the Bay changed their formation from "zone" defense to "man2man" ,They had to up their game and push United. More and more opportunities were starting to come the Bay's way but they could not quite manage to convert any, but the flow of the game was starting to change. 10 minutes to go and Danny Butcher pull one back for the Bay. 5 minutes to go and Michael Back gets another for the Bay, 2-3. The pressure was mounting, end to end play, hard tackles going in from both teams. An illegal challenge from United's Joe Singleton resulted in a red card and he exited the game. Bays Tom White received a second yellow and was off for 2 minutes . The clock was down to 1.30 minutes when a Bay player was taken down in the penalty area. up stepped Danny Butcher to convert it and make the score 3-3. No further goals were scored and at full time it was a tie. This meant up to 10 minutes extra time "Golden Goal" ......first team to score wins.

Extra time started and it was all out to win. 2 minutes in, Tom White, back on from his suspension, received the ball in United's penalty area, as he was taken down he flicked the ball in the top corner!............. Herne Bay were the WINNERS

Whilst it took time for the Bay team to get into the game, they showed patience and character to come from behind. They played hard Hockey in the spirit of the game and if not the best game they have played they were all STARS.

Bay make National Final to set up local derby”

Herne Bay under 20’s Roller Hockey team made their way to the national cup finals in July to set up local derby with town rivals Herne Bay United.

Bay qualified for the playoffs and faced Middlesbrough on their route to the final.
Although it was an under 20’s age group Bay were by far the younger team with 1 player at 14, 2 at 15, 1 at 16 and 2 at 18,

Bay started the game as the underdogs. The game started with neither team wanting to over commit at the front and both defences and goalkeepers did well.
Borough opened the scoring mid way through the 1st half and then went 2 up moments later, although behind, Bay were still very much in the game, Keeper Kristoff White saved 2 penalties and with shots from Dan Butcher and Tom white finding the woodwork, Bay started to push the game and were rewarded with 2 goals from brothers Dan and Richard butcher. 2 – 2 at half time.

The 2nd half was the same close game as the first with Bay again playing their close defensive game, drawing borough in to them and playing counter attach hockey. Borough again scored only to be equalled out by Dan butcher getting his second. Now with some 5 minutes to go both teams started to up the pace of the game and although Bay had more chances borough went ahead. Bay changed their attack and put Tom White up in the opponents goal area, this paid off with 1 Minute to go Bay won a penalty, White was given the job and scored. Final score 4 – 4 this now lead to 2 x periods of extra time, and the possibility of a penalty shoot out.

Bay made the choice that for the first period they would push the game and go for the win early as with a young side the opponents were stronger. With chance, after chance missed or saved Bay could not finish the job, now with little energy left they entered the second period of extra time with the aim of a total shut out,. And to play for a penalty shoot out. The defence held strong and again some fine goalkeeping kept borough out. Final score 4 - 4.
Bay now had to hold their heads in the shoot out to qualify to make the local derby with Herne Bay United a reality.
The Borough captain went first in the 5 shot each thriller, Kriss white saved, Danny butcher was next up and scored, borough again shot but was again saved by the young 16 year old Bay keeper, Richard butcher was next and scored, this was followed again by a fine save from Kriss White, one Bay miss was followed by another great save, this put bay through 6 – 4 on the day.

The bay coach said he was very pleased with all the bay players but man of the match was keeper Kriss White.
Bay now face local rivals HBU in the final.
